The Delta/Greely rifle team will continue its postal matches with the remaining competitions alternating between morning and afternoon sessions following a compromise reached between the team’s coach and district administration.

“The meeting between the coach, Jason Corell, and I went very well,” said Delta/Greely Superintendent Michael Lee. “We both agree on the importance of academics, plus the necessity of training.”

With four postal matches remaining, Lee said the two agreed to alternate the times to prevent students from continually missing the same classes.

“Mr. Lee offered a compromise for our remaining four of the five postal matches we scheduled this year,” Corell said. “We originally had seven postal matches scheduled for the season, but the first two matches were canceled.”

Corell explained that Lee proposed holding half of the remaining matches on Friday mornings, a schedule Corell was willing to accommodate.

“Mr. Lee asked if we could do half of the matches on Friday mornings, which I agreed to. I am available any time on Fridays,” Corell said. “So we will have two days from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and two days from noon to 3:30 p.m.”

Lee said better communication could have prevented much of the disagreement surrounding the schedule.

“It was never our intent to single out the rifle team,” Lee said. “Their dedication and academic achievements have never been questioned. Our goal is, as always, to ensure that we preserve as much instructional time as possible. It aligns with our goal of ‘Make the Most of Every Moment.’”

Corell said both the school district and the rifle team share the same priorities.

“We have the same goal. The students need to excel in academics as well as have the opportunity to excel in rifle,” Corell said. “Hopefully, we can continue with good communication and keep moving forward in a positive direction.”
