The Delta Huskies came within 10 points of defeating the West Valley Wolfpack in Saturday’s rifle match, finishing with a team score of 1,978 to West Valley’s 1,988. Despite the narrow loss, Delta coach Jason Corell was pleased with his team’s performance.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the win, but our team did great,” Corell said. “We had five separate personal-best targets, and it was the first smallbore (.22) match for three of our shooters.”
The Huskies last faced the Wolfpack on October 3 at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen’s Association (TVSA) range in Fairbanks. That competition also included the Lathrop Malemutes and Hutchison Hawks.
“We won the smallbore, outshooting both the Malemutes and the Wolfpack,” Corell said. “We came in last in the air rifle, with Lathrop dominating that match. But we came in second overall that day.”
Lathrop led the October 3 competition with an overall score of 4,368, followed by Delta with 4,237 and West Valley with 4,179. Hutchison finished with 2,165.
In smallbore, the Huskies led the field with a score of 2,128. Lathrop followed with 2,106, while West Valley posted 1,920.
The air rifle competition proved more challenging for Delta. Lathrop topped the field with 2,262, narrowly edging West Valley, which scored 2,259. Delta finished with 2,109.
The Huskies will return to competition Saturday, Oct. 24, when Lathrop hosts the next match at TVSA. Delta is scheduled to compete against the four Fairbanks high schools.
