One could only hope, but the final day of the Buffalo Drive-in was a day of intermittent showers, clouds, and a distinct chill in the air. Drive-in car hops take full advantage of the outside heater. Left to right are Emery Thomas, Jennifer Sidorenko, and Jocelyn Williams. Williams, who has just finished her eighth year at the drive-in, says closing is always a mixture of feelings. “I’m happy I’m no longer in the cold,” she laughed. “This summer wasn’t the warmest. But business was still good. I think people like the timeless feeling of the drive-in. Drive up, wait for a car hop, or get out and order at the window. People like they are talking with a real person, not an automated system. And it's always a pleasure to greet new people and welcome returning customers.” This was Sidorenko’s first year at the drive-in, and she plans to return, citing the great working environment. “And that is my twin brother, Samuel, working inside,” she laughed. “It is also his first year.” The drive-in provided employment for 38 local youth over the summer. It has become a sort of local icon, heralding the beginning of summer, with its closure letting people know that summer is over, but we’ll be back next year! Photo by Michele Trainor
